LHM – January 2019 Message

Wise Brother

“And the Child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.  And the favor of God was upon Him”.  (Lk.2:40)

Wisdom is not usually a word we associate with children.  Silly, foolish, inexperienced, naive but not wise.  What would it be like to have Jesus as a brother?  We know that Jesus had 4 brothers and 2 sisters, at least (Mark 6:3).  What would it be like to have a wise brother, a sinless one?  One that only used the sharp tools in the carpenter’s shop after getting permission and never went joy-riding on the family donkey.  He would never be asked to take out the trash more than once.  It would be a nightmare, maybe not.  Imagine a brother that would help you with your Hebrew homework and comfort you when you were in trouble with Mom and Dad.  But, we don’t have to guess what it would be like!  In fact, Jesus is our wise, loving, and good ‘big brother’.  No joy rides on a donkey for him, instead a long grueling walk to the cross.  The sharp tools were used on Him, so that we could be saved.  He took out trash, the trash of the human race.  All our sin and guilt and evil and shame.  Never again do we have to live with those things.  Now, we live forever with a loving, wise brother who is not ashamed to call us His brothers and His sisters.  Thanks be to God.
