LHM – August 2023 Message

FAITHFUL LIVING

The second half of the Church Year presents a degree of normalcy.  It is the ”season after” the joyous festivals of Pentecost.    Feast days are few and far between.   The Church settles into a faithful rhythm of hearing God’s word, receiving Jesus’ forgiveness and sharing our Lord’s graces.   We live now in the weeks after Pentecost with the Holy Spirit in our sails.  Our task in the months ahead, the season of Ordinary Time, is to celebrate Jesus’ teaching and ministry.  We learn and experience the life of Jesus.  We reflect how we live as Christians.

It is the season of the Spirit.   It’s a time to recall the history of God’s people and the ways God’s wisdom came to them.   The Church steps directly into Jesus’ story, patiently alongside as He teaches, preaches, gives and forgives.  The Prophets of the Church pointed to the Messiah.  The Church relates how Jesus himself, taught and lived in the Gospels.  The Church faithfully continued Jesus’ teachings in the Epistles.

How can we continue to be present with and for God in this season now when life slows down?   Where do we find Him when we are on vacation?    How can we keep focused on God when going to church is not a practice?   The Church is people; it is not a place.   We are called to be the Church, the gathered people of God.  We are called to live out all that Jesus is, has been and will be.   The Church is active and moving, community sharing, fellowship, potlucks and much, much joy.  The Church is responsive to all that God has done.  The time after Pentecost is when we respond to what we have learned in the early months.  It is a time when we actively live out what God as taught us through Jesus Christ.   It is the Church season that our faith is challenged to grow through the preaching and teaching of Christ in His adult ministry.
