God is With Us
What better news is there to know that God is always by our side! God has kept His promise. He has announced that grace and forgiveness are available to all, freely given in the birth of Jesus: God’s Son, our Savior. He is Immanuel, “God is with us”. The birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated during the first season of the church, Advent. Beginning on Sunday, November 29, 2020, Advent is the season of preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas and continuing to Epiphany, January 6, 2021.
We prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. He came into the world as both God and man so that our sins may be forgiven. We repent and admit our failures to God. We anticipate the day when Jesus will return to Earth and bring an end to this world Those will be scary days, but we can look forward with hope because through faith in Jesus, the end of this world will mean the beginning of an eternal life with Christ.
The story of God coming to Earth as a human child is profound. God in the flesh, who was born poorly, humbly, vulnerable into this world of sin and darkness. Our God is not somewhere out there in the cosmos and unconcerned. He is deeply involved in all of our affairs – our joys as well as our heartaches. He knows us for He became one of us. At Christmastime, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, Lord of the universe, Saviour of the world. He is the Shepherd of our lives.
