LHM – June 2022 Message

PROMISED HELPER

The disciples were probably alarmed about the news that Jesus was leaving them.  Jesus’ ministry on Earth would soon come to an end, and He would go to His Father in Heaven. Jesus said ”In My Father’s house are many rooms.

If I go to prepare a place for you,  I will come back and take you to be with Me, that you also may be where I am”.   He promised them that they would not be alone.  ”I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper.  This Helper will be with you forever.”  The disciples waited 10 days after Jesus’ Ascension and on the festival of Pentecost, the promised Holy Spirit poured upon them.   The disciples recognized Jesus’ promised gift.    The mighty wind, the tongues of fire, the ability to speak in different tongues were all signs that Jesus was true to His word.  The Spirit taught the disciples, led them into the truth and enlightened them to see God’s love and mercy.  The Spirit worked through the disciple’s proclamation of the Gospel, drawing people to faith in Jesus and teaching them to walk in the name of the Lord.  The celebration of Jesus’ Ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost was the source of joy in Heaven and on Earth.

Pentecost is a translation from a Greek word meaning fifty. It is always celebrated 7 weeks, about 50days, after Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus.  Originally the Jewish ”Festival of the Wheat Harvest’‘, it dates back to the First century as a Christian holiday. Some churches are decorated with the color red to represent the ”power and fire of the Spirit”.  Churches often welcome new members or confirm existing members on Pentecost through Baptism and confirmations.  That somewhat explains why some refer to the day as ”White Sunday” in reference to the white clothing worn for baptisms. festive meals and church services. Traditions may differ between church denominations,

Pentecost is the opportunity for all Christians to honor the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives and celebrate the birth of the church.

Today,  the Holy Spirit is at work, glorifying Jesus whenever and wherever the Gospel is proclaimed.  The Helper continues to convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement.  We pray to the Holy Spirit that hrough the inspired Word You would guide us into all truth and through our lives and our witness glorify Jesus. Amen.
