AS THE FATHER SENT ME, SO I SEND YOU
The days after Pentecost Sunday begin the second half of the Church year. This ”Season of
the Church” is the time for us to get to work in the life we have been given. This is the time to grow
in our faith and mature as followers of Jesus Christ. Following Jesus is a Holy Spirit-empowered
process as we mature as disciples of Jesus Christ.
God first calls you to “come.” He then invites you to follow Him. Through the gift of faith we
become His disciples and join with Him in His mission. This involves aligning our lives with the One
we follow, the One we want to be most like. We see this idea picked up by the apostle Paul who
writes, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” He knew the responsibility of being
an example to those who trusted him as their teacher in Christ. Discipleship is not some attempt to
get right with God by our own merits. It is about living our lives to honor and worship our Lord and Savior. God has gifted us. God calls us to go beyond our skills and resources. We trust in Him.
But what does it mean to follow Jesus, to be His disciple? We know from the story of the original
disciples that Jesus radically changed their lives. He took them from being fishermen to being fishers of men. He transformed them, slowly, steadily, day by day. They became those that would follow their master, but who would lead others to Him as well. The disciples were just handful of ordinary men, filled with the Spirit. What contemporaries who opposed them said ” These men who have turned the world upside down, have come here.”
He can do the same for you and me. May we be used of the Holy Spirit to turn the world upside down.
