EASTER POSTLUDE
Easter has never had the commercial appeal as Christmas. Most people don’t get an extra day off because it always falls on Sunday. Easter isn’t just a day; it’s not just one and done. Easter is a whole season, The Great 50 Days of Easter is the festive season from Easter Sunday and culminates in the feast of Pentecost Sunday, the day of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The early Church identified Easter Sunday as Pascha, from a Hebrew word meaning Passover. Jesus, the spotless Lamb without sin, was baptized by John the Baptist. He declared ”Behold the Lamb of God”. The blood of Christ spread over the lives of the baptized, and the angel of death to pass over us. We pass, with Christ, through death into life everlasting.
Easter season is filled with many wonderful events; the catch of the fish, Jesus’ teachings, the directive of Jesus ”As the Father has sent me so am I sending you’‘, the three questions to Peter, the empty tomb, the angels, the linen cloth, Mary’s message, “I have seen the Lord” and the disciple’s joy with Jesus rising from the dead and seen by the 500 people. Our ancestors found great symbolic meaning. Easter Sunday became known as the Great Sunday of the year.
What impact does Easter have on your life? Is it a once-a-year festive celebration with Easter lilies and bright Spring clothing? Children learn of transformation watching baby chicks hatch from the shell or seeing a beautiful butterfly emerge from its cocoon. Take a thoughtful and fresh look at the colors of the church. The value of the true color scheme rests in their purpose. White is the color that supports the Easter theme, special church events and other festive Sundays. White is the color of purity and completeness. White reinforces the message of joy. Listen, meditate and take in the words of Jesus‘ promise. ”I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he may die, shall live. Everyone who lives in me, shall never die”.
(John 11:25-26)
Here are some suggestions for you and family to mark the 50 days of Easter. Place fresh flowers on your table or plant a garden to commemorate Easter morning, consider reading Scripture or some of the letters of the New Testament with your family. The church’s earliest days and the beginnings of spreading our faith are found in the Old Testament. These stories of heroism, controversies, persecutions and miracles testify to the presence of Jesus, the disciples, and the Holy Spirit.
