THE LIGHT OF MAN
Our afternoons are getting brighter and more sun these days. It may be a hint of Spring in the air. Spiritually, one of the telltale signs of spring’s arrival is that Lent is about to begin. Lentis derived from the old high German word ”lengizin’‘ meaning lengthening days or spring. As nature awakes from the death of Winter, so Christians seek to strengthen their faith. Lent begins the day after Fat Tuesday, a day customarily of merriment, feasting, drink and a final fling. At the stroke of Midnight on Ash Wednesday, the sober arrival of Lent begins.
Did you ever wish that you could have been there for Jesus? Think what it would be like to hear the crowds shout ”Hosanna” as Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Maybe you could smell and taste the feast at Passover and see Jesus carrying His cross to Golgotha. He was lifted on the cross, bearing our punishment and there He died. Imagine touching the nail wounds in Jesus’ hands when He rose from the dead in resurrection. We cannot do that, but the men and women who were eyewitnesses of these events have left their testimony in the pages of the Gospel. Jesus suffered on our behalf. He endured the abuse we deserve for our sins. He died for us, rose from the grave for us and now He calls us now to bring our every need to Him.
The Lenten season begins Ash Wednesday, Feb 22,2023. The Lenten season is a quiet time, a time of repenting and confessing our sins to God. We need time to learn wisdom and grow close to God. ”Be still and know that I am God”. (Psalm 46:10) Many Christians practice giving up bad habits and fast during Lent. Sacrifice benefits our personal faith and a healthy life. Lent begins in the Winter and into Spring, to Maundy Thursday Apr. 6,2023, the start of the Easter Sunday weekend. During these 40 days, listen to the words of Jesus. Find that quiet place and reflect on God’s profound love. He invites us all; the good, the bad and the ugly. The season of Lent serves not only as a time to meditate on the suffering that Christ endured on our behalf, but also as an opportunity to reflect upon our own Baptism. It is a time we pray we may be given the fullness of grace that belongs to the Children of God. As Christians, you are part of what God is doing through the Lutheran Hour Ministries.
