LHM – June 2024 Message

DAY OF PENTECOST

”I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away the Helper
will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.” John 16:7

In this church season, we remember when the Holy Spirit came down from heaven to
the early Christians ten days after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Pentecost ushers in a
new liturgical season of the church. Ordinary, from the Latin word ”ordinarius” and means
orderly. ”Ordinary Time” is for the church time to focus on Gospel business, mission and
service. The first Pentecost was not entirely new to the disciples. They had heard about
this Helper before.

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, He told the disciples that He would go to Jerusalem to die
on the cross for the sins of the world and rise on the third day. Because He died on the cross
and rose from the dead, we have forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Yet Jesus also talked
about how He would ascend into heaven and send the Spirit. He promised that the Spirit
would multiply and extend Christ’s work through His church. The first Pentecost was part of
the continuity of the Christ’s ongoing work to spread His good gifts of forgiveness, life, and
salvation to the world. The church is privileged to be part of this world.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the apostles at the first Pentecost was a unique event
in the history of the church. The Holy Spirit’s activity continues today. The Spirit, our helper,
invites us to pray for comfort and hope. It strengthens us in our faith. It reminds us that Christ,
our Savior. holds us in His undying grip and consoles us. The Spirit does not give us over to
discouragement and uncertainty. It confirms in us the belief that God’s word is true and His
promises true. The Holy Spirit gives us joy in the midst of grief, peace in the face of fear.
It calls and gathers believers to Christ and His church. We Christians pray for the outpouring
of the Holy Spirit and the fulfillment of His sanctifying work.

As Christians, we are part of what God is doing through the Lutheran Hour Ministries.
Your support and prayers make a very real impact on this ministry every day. Look forward
to see how the Lord will work through us.
