ROLE OF THE FAITHFUL
Here we are, in the season after Pentecost that we sometimes refer to simply as ”Ordinary Time”. It’s a long season of the church. Ordinary time after Pentecost resumes following the conclusion of the Easter season and extends until the beginning of Advent. ”Ordinary” does not mean common or unspecial. Instead it derives from the word ”ordinal” meaning orderly or counted, as each Sunday within this season are numbered. The liturgical color is green, symbolizing hope and growth. We might have preferred to settle into this season of the church with a more relaxed approach but the Gospels will have none of that, The Gospels proclaim to center on the life and ministry of Jesus, the way he taught, healed, forgave, and called people to himself. We hear his parables, his miracles, his conversations with the disciples, his commands to love, to serve and to follow him.
During this season, Christians are encouraged to bear fruit in the spirit of the teachings of Jesus. This includes engaging more deeply with the church’s mission through acts of charity, community service and evangelism. Ordinary time is an opportunity for Christians to live out their faith actively and visibly. It calls for a commitment to applying the Gospel’s values in all aspects of life, promoting justice, peace, and love in the world. Ordinary time after Pentecost is a crucial part of the liturgical year that emphasizes discipleship and active faith. It challenges believers to continue the work of the apostles by spreading the good news and living according to the teachings of Jesus.
As Christians, we are part of what God is doing through the Lutheran Hour Ministries. We pray for the outpouring of the Spirit and the fulfillment of His work. Your devotions and support make a very real impact on this ministry every day.
