Servant of the Lord
We all know why we were baptized; we were sinners and enemies of God. We became God’s own children, clean and holy. This happened because of God’s own promise to everyone who believes in His Son, Jesus.
We are now in the church season of Epiphany; the time we celebrate Jesus’ Baptism. We remember the day Jesus went down to the River Jordan and was baptized by His cousin, John. But, why? Jesus wasn’t a sinner; He never did anything wrong in His life. He wasn’t an enemy of God. He was God’s own Son. God called Jesus, “My chosen, in whom My soul delights”. This means God is happy with Jesus. Jesus’ Baptism; Jesus’ Epiphany! When Jesus was baptized, God spoke from Heaven, “You are my beloved Son, with You I am well pleased”. Enlightened, Jesus begins His public ministry to the World.
What kind of servant was Jesus? Jesus depended on God all the way. He did not try to do things in His own power or strength, according to His human nature. He trusted in God for everything He needed. Jesus has all the power in heaven an on earth, but He leads us gently; tenderly. When our faith is burning low, like a candle about to go out, He makes us strong again. He never gives up on us, no matter how broken we are. Jesus is the real servant of the Lord. He fulfills God’s law perfectly. He went to the cross and died for our sins. He did this because He loves us.
Jesus calls us to follow Him. His gift to us, as we remember our own baptism, is the opportunity to share in the service of God’s people. Let us welcome this blessed gift our God gives to us and embrace it wholeheartedly.
